Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Viii+264 pages and the advert leaf at rear, part 1 only but complete with own index, advertisement leaf after title, with 7 double page pieces of music for 1,2, & 3 voices. The work contains advice for apparel, companions, servants, health, feet preservation, How to eat and drink, Medicine chests, sending packages, beds, defence, expenses, stage coach and inn costs, town and country traditions, contraband luggage, Hints for ALPINE Tourists! Letters of credit, directions for making Warm-Heart (a cocktail to revive the spirits), Hobgoblin dramas of Germany, etc & then the music for the traveller, passages on music and toasts of our country set to music! Original paper boards and paper spine, worn and handled, pages uncut and all hand made rag paper used, a few pages with some light foxing, but all tight very good internally, the spine has some loss at top edge and corners worn, however this is an unsophisticated copy with no restoration, so despite the wear a VG copy overall. Small octavo. 1827. *Author wrote "The Cook's Oracle" in 1822 and this book is apparently "a very amusing read and better than a novel". The 2nd part by John Jervis a coachman deals with the management of coaches and horses in the main, so this does handle as a complete single volume. NOTE** The author has the fine distinction of creating or inventing "the potato chip" (For Americans French Fries) and was a most congenial host and friend also an inventor of optical instruments a an aside, well regarded both here and in the USA in the 19th century.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 336 pages (complete). A handy, happy copy of this fascinating book. Not only is there much advice about horses and carriages, owning them, maintaining them, using them, there is also etiquette, working practice tips and instruction for the coachman. There is also a most engaging section on an employer's social responsibilities toward the coachman: "Merciful Masters, who use their Carriage in Wet Weather, provide the Coachman Two Box Coats: - a Second-hand Coat may be bought for about 2. 10s. - a slight increase to their Expense, a great addition to his Comfort: for when a Box Coat gets thoroughly Wet, it will take forty-eight hours before it becomes thoroughly Dry; for it must not be dried otherwise than gradually and in the Air. Mr Jarvis says, that "the best way of drying a Box Coat on these occasions, is to put it round a a Truss of Straw.". Whatever Olympic Wits or Whips might think, there are few modern Jockies who will agree with Pindarus, that Water is the best thing, at least for the lining of the Inner or the Outer Coat of the Stomach." The boards are smart. They are a little scuffed here and there but also steady (bound by Columbian Press in Calcutta). The early pages and later pages have aging and storage marks. The contents between are healthy, very assured, clean (for their age), clear, contented. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. viii, 264 pp; viii, 336 pp, 1 leaf [ad: "Preparing for publication, by subscription, of a whole-length portrait of the late Dr. Kitchiner, from an original picture, painted by Mr. Turner, in the possession of his son, Mr. W. Kitchiner. . ." (see photo)]; 7 printed song scores bound in Part I. These songs are bound in as individual leaves in this copy. I have seen them described as folding in some other copies. Original boards, with original printed paper spine labels. Untrimmed (I can supply more photos of the bindings, upon request). Near Fine. WHICH EDITION is this set? In 1827 first and second editions were published, although the second edition is actually a reprinting and not a revision. This set does NOT have "Second Edition" printed on either title page, so, internally, it looks just like the First Edition. However, on the original printed paper spine labels, "Second Edition" is printed (see photo). I have seen a set in the original binding which has "Second Edition" printed on each title page, but its spine labels do NOT have "Second Edition " printed on them, so it is the exact opposite of my set! There are sets of the First Edition with spine labels that do not include "Second Edition". Part I subtitle: Estimates of the expenses of travelling on foot on horseback in stages in post chaises and in private carriage: with Seven songs for one, two, and three voices, composed by William Kitchiner, M.D. Part II subtitle: Horse and carriage keeper's oracle; Rules for purchasing and keeping or jobbing horses and carriages; Estimates of expenses occasioned thereby; and An easy plan for ascertaining every hackney-coach fare, by John Jervis, an old coachman. The whole revised by William Kitchiner, M.D. FOR THE RECORD: a third edition was published in 1828. All three editions were published posthumously, as Kitchiner died on February 27, 1827. Despite the designation on the title page, Kitchiner did not have an M.D. degree. Kitchiner is best known for a different "Oracle": Apicius redivivus, or, The Cook's Oracle, which was first published in 1817. His book The Art of Invigorating and Prolonging Life, by Food, Clothes, Air, Exercise, Wine, Sleep, &c., which was originally published in 1821, had "The Invalid's Oracle" added to its title in 1828. NOTE ABOUT FORMER OWNER OF THIS COPY: The signature of former owner "Northwick" is on the flyleaf in each volume. Might "Northwick" be John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick (1770 1859)? The Baron did have an armorial bookplate, which is not present in this set, but does that rule out this being his copy? You tell me.
