Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Harry Stoner could sell anything. He could sell the public his new line of dresses year after year. He could sell the big store buyers his design in return for such bonuses as the luscious hooker Margo. He could sell his wife on the idea he was faithful, and a teenaged playmate on the idea he was hip. Then came the day when Harry Stoner's empire of fabric and flesh began to fall apart, and Harry had nothing left to sell - except what was left of himself.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Wendell Minor (illustrator). First Edition. [nice clean copy with no significant wear, very slight fading to cloth at top of spine; the jacket has a number of tiny scrape marks on the front panel and a ragged 1.5-inch closed tear at the top of the spine]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For ____ / a fellow addict / with great affection / Steve Shagan / Oct 1972." Novel about an aging garment-industry businessman in Los Angeles who's in an existential crisis, "forced to come to grips with his failures and the life he had made for himself." The author's first novel, it had actually been a screenplay first, although the chronology is left a little fuzzy by the jacket statement that Shagan "has also written the film script of this [novel]." In any event, the film went into production at about the same time the novel came out and was released in February 1973. Shagan produced the film as well as getting the screenplay credit, and its star, Jack Lemmon, received his first and only Best Actor Academy Award (although he was nominated six other times in that category). Signed by Author.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Original printed manuscript of the first five chapters of the 1972 book, housed in the its original gray envelope with the annotations "'Save the Tiger' / Original Novel MS. / (First 79 PP.)." Steve Shagan's Academy Award nominated debut feature screenplay, "Save the Tiger," was originally written in 1970, three years before the film's 1973 release. By 1972, in part to "preserve my sanity," according to Shagan, and prodded by actor Jack Lemmon, Shagan novelized his script in the hopes of increasing the studio's interest in the property and to garner financing, and was published by Dial Press in late November, 1972. By the time of the novel's publication however, filming had been completed and was set for a February 1973 release date. The screenplay would be the first of two Academy Award nominated screenplays by Shagan (followed by the 1976 film "Voyage of the Damned," directed by Stuart Rosenberg) and earned Lemmon his only Academy Award for Best Actor. A garment industry executive is faced with tough moral decisions amidst a failing business and a mid-life crisis. 8.5 x 11 inches, 81 pages, Xerographic duplication.
