First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First Impression. Just About Fine in publisher's original card wrappers, in french-fold pale puce-yellow folded cover, in folded glassine over-wrapper. "Being an English rendering of Justine ou les Malheurs de la vertu [1791] done by Pieralessandro Casavini. The text of the present [edition] is the first complete and integral translation to be presented in English; it constitutes the earlier [much longer] version of the novel eventually published in Holland in 1797." 330pp. English only. Text and endpapers clean and unmarked. Justine was one of de Sade's earliest work, and the one for which he is most remembered (and despised). Though it is a work of titillation and degradation, it has become symbolic among certain post-Modern European scholars as characterizing a certain kind of philosophical attitude towards life, which some have characterized as modern. Quite uncommon in this edition in this condition. Q08990.
