Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 'Germany wasnt really a place for settling in, because after the war it was pretty devastated, and there wasnt really a chance to start again, so I thought Id come to England. It was a case of people between 18 and 50 and you had to be fit because it was mainly physical work. For men, it was mines and agricultural work and brick factories and women, mainly textiles.' 'We were thinking it was temporary. We were thinking the war would restart with the west and the east, and that the west would win, and we would be going home. But, it wasn't like that.' After the Second World War, thousands of Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian refugees, uprooted by war and conflict in their homelands, were recruited from Displaced Persons Camps in Germany to fill labour shortages in Britain. This unknown episode in Britain's immigration history is brought to life in this book, through interview extracts and documentary sources. Women were the first recruits to the so-called European Volunteer Worker Schemes, in which 25,000 Baltic men and women came to Britain between 1946 and 1951, to work in hospitals, textiles, agriculture, coal mining and other undermanned areas of industry.Initially regarding their stay in Britain as temporary, a majority of these Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian men and women remained in Britain their whole lives. Recently joined by more migrants from the Baltic States, this book tells the story of Britain's Baltic communities, from the earliest accounts of their arrival in Britain to the present day. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The first prisons were in the dungeons of empires and castles, places of neglect and sheer oblivion. Every civilization has had its dissenters and its 'deviants' - criminals as well as political offenders, and so prisons became essential to the retention of power. As the centuries passed after classical times, and prisons were needed for other categories of person, such as debtors, states across the world began to cater for a variety of prisoners, and legal systems became more closely linked to incarceration. The World's Most Notorious Prisons traces this development, from the state prisons of Athens and Rome, through to the birth of the house of correction and the penitentiary. Stephen Wade tells the stories of the infamous penal colonies and state prisons across the stage of world history, from Alcatraz to Van Dieman's Land, and from the Siberian gulags to the massive superjails of modern America. The book traces the stories of inmates and staff, political regimes and the rise and fall of empires, all seen through the prison walls. The history of prisons, as is often noted, throws light on the human political and state structures which generated punishments which have taken away individual freedom, sometimes with a degree of humanitarian concern, and sometimes with sheer barbarism. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The first policewomen were established during the Great War, but with no powers of arrest; the first women lawyers did not practise until the early twentieth century, and despite the fact that women worked as matrons in Victorian prisons, there were few professional women working as prison officers until the 1920s. The Justice Women traces the social history of the women working in courts, prisons and police forces up to the 1970s. Their history includes the stories of the first barristers, but also the less well-known figures such as women working in probation and in law courts. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Tales from the Big House: Normanby Hall tells the story of a place known perhaps today mainly as the home where Samantha Cameron grew up, but historically it has been the seat of the Sheffield family, whose most famous member was arguably the Duke of Buckingham in the seventeenth century. As with most country houses, the Hall was used as a military hospital in the Great War, and in the Second World War there were military personnel based there again. It stands just a few miles from the great steelworks on the Brigg Road, which have always defined Scunthorpe, so it played its part in the history of steel-making also. The book includes biographies of the famous but also tells of the lives of the ordinary people who kept the house and the estate going, from the gamekeepers to the gardeners, and the cooks to the stable hands. All this is set against the social background through the centuries of its existence, up to the sale of the Hall to Scunthorpe Borough Council in 1964 . The lives familiar to us today from _Downton Abbey_ and similar family sagas are at the heart of Stephen Wades history. But along the way, the reader will meet such characters as Sir Berkeley Sheffield, model railway enthusiast, Walter Brierley, architect, Thomas Sumpter, the schoolmaster, John Fletcher, machine-maker, and perhaps most charismatically of all, Lady Arthur Grosvenor, an expert on gypsy caravans. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The truth is that professional sport is a breeding ground for addictive behaviour. Luke Sutton is a business owner and successful agent to sporting stars such as James Taylor, Nile Wilson and Sam Quek, but his life didn't always look so positive. Back from the Edge reveals the huge ups and major downs that a professional career in sport can bring - and the mental health difficulties that can plague a sportsperson along the way. Luke knows this more than most. Brutually but refreshingly honest, this no-frills autobiography of the former professional cricketer describes in detail the moment he hit rock bottom, how he got there, his rollercoaster journey through rehab, and the important lessons he's learnt since. Throughout the book, Luke remains candid and reveals how his addictions affected his personal life, from his friends to family to his children. Back from the Edge is heart-wrenching. It's also thoroughly genuine, funny and utterly inspirational, and has allowed the former cricketer to speak about his mental health and to raise awareness of addiction in sport. Now a sports agent, he is perfectly placed to spot the warning signs in young stars, and to support them before they spiral into the same type of experiences he faced. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Using much previously-unpublished photographic, art and manuscript material from the Liddle Collection in the Library of the University of Leeds, this book aims to bring readers closer to the British soldiers, sailors and airmen of World War I. Contemporary evidence has captured much individual experience of the battlefield, and changes in attitude and culture as the war moved people from their familiar daily round to hugely-changed surroundings, through prolonged months, then years, of challenge. Civilian life is reflected too, from the industrial scene and rationing to conscientious objectors. The topics covered include pre-war society, the call the arms, war in the air, the Dardenelles, the maritime challenge, soldiering in distant parts, the Home Front, soldier and civilian captivity, soldiering on the Western Front, and the Armistice and beyond. Peter Liddle has written 12 previous World War I books, and the Channel 4 television series, The 1916 Battle of the Somme, was based on his work. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The publication of Battle Stations is timed to coincide with the first UK screening of the first four parts of the major new History Channel series of the same name. Each chapter (and each programme) covers one particular legendary weapon system; the Spitfire, the Sherman Tank, DC-3 Dakota and the amphibious DUKW. The story is told from the earliest design stage, through production to its battle-winning use in a particular theatre and phase of the Second World War. The series is as much about the men - and women - responsible for creating and using each weapon as the equipments themselves. The closely researched but highly readable text is lavishly supported by fabulous photographs. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Gunter Koschorrek wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on, storing them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was not until he was reunited with his daughter in America some forty years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. The author's excitement at the first encounter with the enemy in the Russian Steppe is obvious. Later, the horror and confusion of fighting in the streets of Stalingrad are brought to life by his descriptions of the others in his unit - their differing manners and techniques for dealing with the squalor and death. He is also posted to Romania and Italy, assignments he remembers fondly compared to his time on the Eastern Front. This book stands as a memorial to the huge numbers on both sides who did not survive and is, some six decades later, the fulfilment of a responsibility the author feels to honour the memory of those who perished. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. For centuries London's East End has been associated with some of the worst elements of human depravity, where foul deeds and murder were commonplace; and in 1888 the area's notoriety was added to by the horrific murders committed by Jack the Ripper. The East End was populated by people crammed together in close knit communities. As the East End had grown from the ancient villages along the river, so much of the village atmosphere remained and rivalry existed throughout the area despite there being some of the worst depravity and vilest slums to be found anywhere in the country. For instance the residents of Bethnal Green looked down their noses at those from Hoxton, barely half a mile away. During the 1930's after the depression a Government report estimated 60% of the children in Bethnal Green suffered from malnutrition and 85% of the housing was unsatisfactory. These were the times when the notorious Kray Twins were cutting their teeth. For centuries the East End's notoriety for foul deeds has remained unsurpassed in the annals of crime in this country. This claim to fame, is not without justification, as the pages of this book show. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Murder and robbery committed on the railways have long held a special place in British criminal history. Railways and trains create special conditions - and opportunities - for criminal acts. Two legendary large-scale robberies took place on the British railways - the Great Bullion Robbery of 1855 and the Great Train Robbery of 1963 - and these extraordinary episodes are often used as examples of the ultimate in criminal audacity. But as Jonathan Oates shows in this powerful selection of case studies, most railway crime is less sensational yet, in many ways, more revealing. He reconstructs in vivid detail some of the most memorable cases dating from Victorian times to the present day. Included are cases of adults and children who were thrown to their deaths from trains, decapitated corpses found beside railway lines, passengers who were pushed from platforms into the path of oncoming trains and others who were stabbed, shot or strangled during their journeys and were found dead on arrival. The sheer variety of crimes is astonishing, as are the stories that unravel behind them. As he retells these sensational, bizarre, often ghastly tales, Jonathan Oates gives an insight into the reality of railway crime. His collection is a must for addicts of true crime cases and for readers who enjoy railway history.Dr Jonathan Oates is the Ealing Borough Archivist and Local History Librarian, and he has written and lectured on aspects of the history of London, including its criminal past. His books include several volumes on West London in the Images of London series as well as Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in Ealing, Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in Lewisham and Deptford, Unsolved Murders in Victorian and Edwardian London and Unsolved London Murders: The 1920s and 1930s. He has also published a study of the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 and Sweet William or The Butcher? The Duke of Cumberland and the '45. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is the story of a professional soldier and of his many adventures throughout the world. His father was a soldier, and it was no surprise when young Nigel Poett went to Sandhurst and then to Egypt, the North-West Frontier, India, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. His long career included appointment as Director of Military Operations in the Suez crisis and Commandant-General of Staff College, and ended with his command of the Far East Land Forces. Possibly the most eventful period, however, was when, as an Airborne Brigadier, he was given the task of commanding the airborne assault on the two vital bridges over the Orne which had to be captured to secure the left flank of the Normandy Invasion front. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Aspects of Bradford 2 follows the marked success of Aspects of Bradford 1, which spent over six weeks in the best seller lists when it came out late in 1999. This new edition contains a further set of contributions from well known and new local authors. Additionally, the vast majority of illustrations in this edition have been commissioned for the book or are previously unpublished images. In Aspects of Bradford 2, we encounter the lot, not always happy, of patients in Bradford Royal Infirmary during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the life, work and behaviour of the management of Fountains Brewery during the 1950's. The chequered career of the building which housed Ilkley College until recently is examined in Full Circle, where the building which first functioned as a water cure hotel, is now about to begin life once more as a hotel. In Random Reverie, we are reminded of childhood experiences during and immediately following World War 2, perhaps including walks in the century old Lister Park, the Olungs' of Bradford, with its many recreational attractions. Keighley during the 1900's was a hotbed of protest against compulsory innoculation against smallpox, with several protesters being committed to prison for their beliefs. In addition, we are introduced to both Methodism and the Literary scene in turn of the century Bradford, including the publication of OThe Saunterers Satchel', followed by a glimpse of eighteenth Century Life in the City. These and many more pinpoint views of Bradford's history make Aspects of Bradford 2 into the perfect gift for anyone interested in the history of the city. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The rapid expansion of the RAF during the mid/late 1930s necessitated a massive storage requirement for high explosive bombs and other ordinance. Drawing on the experience of the Great War ammunition factories, the authorities set about identifying underground sites around Britain safe from the threat of air attack. Unfortunately in the haste of the moment safety arrangements were not a high priority and, as a result, there were a number of appalling accidents; the most serious occurred in November 1944 when 3,800 tons of HE bombs detonated at the same time resulting in the deaths of 68 people in a Staffordshire quarry. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. John Masefield's Sea Life in Nelson's Time is the brilliantly told story of the ships of Nelson's navy and, more especially, of their sailors and a naval glory 'built up by the blood and agony of thousands of barbarously maltreated men'. From beginning to end, from the floor of the mould-loft where the master shipwrights drew up the plans of their ships, through to the epilogue, a poetic eulogy for sailors long dead and gone, Masefield breathes life into the bare facts of life on board for the men and officers: the duties of each man, the unwholesome food, the cramped and filthy living quarters, the inhuman punishments, the 'floating hell' of a ship in action and the pitifully primitive hospital facilities. The life of the ordinary seaman in the British Navy in the late 18th century fascinated and appalled Masefield, who described it as 'brutalising, cruel and horrible', but it fired his imagination and his prose and this vividly realistic study, the first of its kind, remains the most comprehensive introduction to the subject. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. From 1792-1815 Europe was convulsed by a series of wars, first against revolutionary France and then the empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. The period opened with an untrained French citizen army defying an alliance of major powers, and climaxed with France controlling the whole of continental Europe. It was the flexibility and tactical brilliance of Napoleon that burst the straitjacket of formal 18th century land warfare. The author takes as detailed samples the battles of Turcoing, Castiglione, Marengo, Eylau, Salamanca and Waterloo together with the two sea battles of Algeciras. The tactics and strategy of land and sea warfare are explored and discussed in the diversely illustrated book. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The First World War airship and aeroplane raids by Germany on Britain constituted the first strategic bombing campaign in history. It was a novel and unwelcome means of waging war that provoked panic and resentment, and dispelled Britain's island sense of security. The raiders, demonised as 'baby killers' for causing indiscriminate civilian casualties, may not have crushed British morale, but they disrupted war production and succeeded in diverting personnel, arms and aeroplanes from where they were needed most at the Front. Most important, the raids changed the face of warfare for ever by bringing the whole nation into the front line. The book features previously unpublished photographs and is divided into a history of the raids as they occurred, and a gazetteer with detailed information about many of the placed that were bombed. Attention is drawn to the physical scars made by the raids that may still be seen today, and to the memorials erected to the victims. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Clubman, yachtsman and bon viveur Johnnie Coote modestly suggested in the first volume of his autobiography, Submariner, that he was endowed with a measure of indifference to hardship and the other occupational hazards of submarine warfare. Now he tells how a different but equally desirable form of courage was called for when he left the Royal Navy soon after promotion to Captain and entered the jungle of Fleet Street as an executive trainee in Beaverbrook Newspapers. Intrigue and disloyalty were quickly in evidence to an extent which would have been inconceivable in his earlier career. Since his only apparent qualification was acquaintanceship with Lord Beaverbrook's son, Max, it says much for his talent for survival that he thrived in this unfamiliar cut-throat world. So, under his unobtrusive management, did Beaverbrook Newspapers. Johnnie Coote joined the Group when all its newspapers were on the commanding peaks of Fleet Street, the mecca of every aspiring journalist, envied and imitated by their rivals. But the leaders of the print unions, with their restrictive practices and grossly inflated manning scales, were already holding the industry to ransom. He tells how they refused to see they were digging their own graves; and of happier encounters with such titans of the Street as John Gordon, Hugh Cudlipp, John Junor, Chapman Pincher, Charles Wintour and the ageing Canadian autocrat who held nearly all the voting shares. The pace of work, and of play, was hectic, calling for the stamina of a team of oxen. But, unlike most of its competitors, the Express had failed to diversify its interests, and the writing was on the wall. Johnnie Coote tells with some sadness of the twilight of the greatest days of Fleet Street and how his far-seeing survival plan fell victim to others' ambitions and blind optimism. He ends on a happier note, describing some of the joys of retirement, with time to read and write, to support the Chichester theatre, go sailing, play Real Tennis and visit his favourite watering-holes, the Garrick Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Exploring the Lives of Women, 1558-1837 is an engaging and lively collection of original, thought-provoking essays. Its route from Lady Jane Grey's nine-day reign to Queen Victoria's accession provides ample opportunities to examine complex interactions between gender, rank, and power. Yet the book's scope extends far beyond queens: its female cast includes servants, aristocrats, literary women, opera singers, actresses, fallen women, athletes and mine workers. The collection explores themes relating to female power and physical strength; infertility, motherhood, sexuality and exploitation; creativity and celebrity; marriage and female friendship. It draws upon a wide range of primary materials to explore diverse representations of women: illuminating accounts of real women's lives appear alongside fictional portrayals and ideological constructions of femininity. In exploring women's negotiations with patriarchal control, this book demonstrates how the lived experience of women did not always correspond to prescribed social and gendered norms, revealing the rich complexity of their lives. This volume has been published to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Women's Studies Group 1558-1837 . The group was formed to promote research into any aspect of women's lives as experienced or depicted within this period. The depth, range and creativity of the essays in this book reflect the myriad interests of its members. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
