Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. "It had to happen. After books about individual decades came books about individual years. Now we get the book about a single season. Bill Bryson's One Summer is the story of just four months - June to September 1927 - in the life of America. Four crucial months, needless to say - four months in which, Bryson contends, his homeland came to dominate the world in everything from banking to baseball and talkies to telly. In anyone else's hands, it should be said, this book could be an almighty mess - a circus without a ringmaster. But few writers of nonfiction, and, let's be honest, few enough writers of novels, can crack the narrative whip like Bryson. One Summer fairly whirls along. Bryson moves his cast of colourful characters around with such silky efficiency you don't mind that too many of them aren't doing anything very interesting." - Christopher Bray.

Signed on title page "All Best Jean Sasson" 'As second-generation members of the royal family who have benefited from Saudi oil wealth, Maha and Amani have never known the poverty which their parents experienced as children. Surrounded by untold opulence and luxury from the day they were born and which they take for granted, but stifled by the unbearably restrictive lifestyle imposed on them, they have reacted in equally desperate ways. Their dramatic and shocking stories, together with many more which concern other members of Princess Sultana's huge family, are set against a rich backcloth of Saudi Arabian culture and social mores which she depicts with equal colour and authenticity. We learn, for example, of this fascinating ritual of the world-famous annual pilgrimage to Makkah as we accompany the princess and her family to this holiest of cities. Throughout, however, she never tires of her quest to expose the injustices which her society levels against women. In her courageous campaign to improve the lot of her own daughters of Arabia, Princess Sultana once more strikes a chord amongst all women who are lucky enough to have the freedom to speak out for themselves.' Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, bottom corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (£20.00), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 288pp, illustrated, illustrated endpapers. The Terracotta Army is one of the greatest, and most famous, archaeological discoveries of all time. 6,000 life size figures of warriors and horses were interred in the Mausoleum of the First Emperor of China, each is individually carved, and they are thought to represent real members of the emperor's army. This is the remarkable story of their creation, the man who ordered them made, their rediscovery and their continuing legacy as a pre eminent symbol of Chinese greatness. The First Emperor Qin Shi Huang, was king of the Chinese state of Qin and the first man to unite China into a single empire. He built the first Great Wall and brought a single written script to the whole country. He was an inspired and ruthless ruler, but one also beset by paranoia and a desire for immortality. He is still considered the founding father of the modern state of China. On his death in 210 BC he was buried in a giant mausoleum near modern day Xi'an. Legends of the treasures contained therein still tantalize the imagination today. In 1974 local farmers digging a well for water broke through into the burial mound and found the first of the Terracotta warriors. Further excavations have revealed the full splendour of the buried army. But the majority of the mausoleum is yet to be opened, including the burial chamber itself, myth tells us that amongst the treasures yet to be uncovered is a vast map of the First Emperor's kingdom with rivers marked with channels of flowing mercury. The story of the First Emperor and the Terracotta Army is a fascinating one, not least for the discoveries yet to be made. Quite a scarce book.
