Hardcover. Condition: Good. Product DescriptionAt the novel's beginning, Imola Bartolai's lucid, yet troubled voice speaks from a mountain village on the border of Tuscany in northern Italy where she lives a hard life close to the land with her wandering husband and three children. Her favorite brother, Egidio, seeks a better life in America in the coal mines of Dawson, New Mexico. When Egidio's quiet voice is silenced by a horrific accident, the voice of his childhood friend and traveling companion, Antenore Gimorri, passionately urges their fellow workers to join the struggle for labor rights. As a stonemason, Gimorri raises three sons in the Chicago area, and it is his granddaughter, Adele, fully assimilated into American life, who closes the circle, traveling to Italy in search of her family's roots. In the novel's final section, her voice imaginatively joins Imola's as the two women, separated in time by a hundred years, find there are many threads that bind them.About the AuthorAdria Bernardi teaches in the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers near Asheville, North Carolina.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. At the heart of this study of the relationship between Greek vases and their decoration - and between the decoration and the function of the vase - is a very well presented catalogue of 43 Greek and Etruscan vases exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid. Each entry comprises at least one colour photograph of the vase accompanied by a full description and discussion of the form of the vase, its function, date and historical context, and the design and meaning of its decoration. Arranged chronologically, the vases date from c.850 to the end of the 4th century BC and demonstrate continuities and change in iconography as the influence of Greek potters spread further afield and interacted with local Italian cultures. The catalogue is preceded by five essays which include an introduction to Greek vases by Karl Kilinski II. The other essays discuss: depictions of vases on vases (Jenifer Neils) ; new appraches to Greek vases: repetition, aesthetics and meaning (Ann Steiner) ; myth and reality on Greek vases (Sarah Peirce) ; men, beasts and monsters: pattern and narrative in Etruscan art (P Gregory Warden) . There is also a discussion of the history of the Madrid collection by Paloma Cabrera, the chief curator of the Roman and Greek Antiquities Department.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. In what remains the only full-length biography of Owen Wister (18601938), Darwin Payne details the life of the man who created the popular image of the cowboy that dominated American culture from the early 1900s to the 1960s. Payne follows Wister from his privileged childhood in Philadelphia, to his undergraduate days at Harvard, to his musical studies in Europe, to his discovery of the West, and through his maturation as an individual and a writer. Payne draws on Wisters own voluminous papers and writings in delineating, for the first time, the real-life incident that prompted Wister to invent the character of the Virginian, and in presenting the actual individual whom the famous character most closely resembles. Payne also provides intimate details about Wisters surprising friendships with such prominent American figures as Theodore Roosevelt, William Dean Howells, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., William James, Frederic Remington, and John Jay Chapman. Softcover. Condition: Good. Contemporary Americans often view politics as a necessary evil. This cogent and original work uses the ancient philosophical/political tradition of the West to rehabilitate the high vocation of the politician and the citizen in the modern world.Kane seeks to locate human beings and such philosophical notions as the public good, public virtue, public speech, and public action in the complicated middle between the bestial and the divine. To live as best we can on that middle path is, he believes, our vocation as citizens. The classical tradition comes alive in fresh ways as Kane applies it to key contemporary events and figures, from Elizabeth Bouvia (who wanted medical practitioners to help her die) to Rosa Parks (who wanted equal treatment on a city bus). By paying close attention to our public transactions, Kane shows how the reality of the common good operates in our lives.Kane contends that we are more likely to rediscover our political selves not in broad national or international forums but in our local communities where character can be displayed and authentic speech and action become possible.Aimed at a broad interdisciplinary and inter-professional audience, Kane's book is accessible to the interested citizen. Weaving through the tangled web of contemporary politics, including issues of character and virtue, Kane sails against the prevailing currents of strident individualism and political cynicism.

Lewis Hankes seminal work is the first significant English-language discussion of the legitimacy of conquestan issue currently debated in the context of alleged economic and cultural hegemony. First published in 1949, Hankes book remains a landmark in the historiography of the Americas, the point of departure for both historians and legal academics studying early Native American-European encounters and their implications. Hankes colorful prose introduces not only Bartolomé de Las Casas, but other heroes and villains of the Spanish national debate over the political, legal, and moral legitimacy of conquest. This new edition features a previously unpublished personal and professional reminiscence by the author and an introduction by Susan Scafidi and Peter Bakewell. 1st Southern Methodist University Press ed.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. The dozen personal essays in this collection, from patients and their caregivers, nurses, social workers, and physicians, address the devastating human results that can occur from a lack of communication and understanding among those in the health care profession. Medical error--much of it traceable to simple lack of communication--costs billions of dollars each year, in addition to the less quantifiable costs of the loss of trust in doctor-patient relationships and the decline in morale among health care professionals. These powerful stories illustrate the need to find ways to break these potentially lethal silences. In "Mrs. Kelly," a doctor obeying his superior's order sends a man home from the emergency room against his better judgment, agonizes over his decision, and later calls the man's widow to apologize. In "In Praise of Osmosis," a critical-care nurse pressures a hospital's hierarchy to authorize the continuous renal replacement therapy her patient needs to prevent imminent and irreversible damage to his kidneys. In "You Have the Right to Remain Silent," an inmate's sister must fight her way through miles of red tape to get treatment for the Hepatitis-C her brother contracted in prison.Inspired by groundbreaking research by VitalSmarts, a global leader in organizational performance and leadership, and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), and supported by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, Lee Gutkind, editor of the journal Creative Nonfiction, has collected the essays in this volume--with the hope that these voices, speaking out, taking action and risks, will inspire others to make changes that will improve communication within our troubled health care system.
