On the Road to Tibet. Authorized reprint from the first and only edition: The Shanghai Mercury, Ltd. Shanghai 1910. - Color. illustr. Paperback - brand new, in perfect condition, never touched. 149 S. isbn 393199726x - Frank Kingdon-Ward was born Francis Kingdon Ward (no hyphen) on 6th november 1885 in Manchester. He was educated at Colet court and St.Paul's school, then Christ's college Cambridge where his father Harry Marshall Ward was professor of botany. He served in the British army in both world wars although he saw almost no action (despite requesting postings to the front!). He was discharged with the rank of Captain. In his first adventure he was offered a place on a zoological expedition led by an American and funded by the Duke of Bedford to search for new species in western China. He agonised over the decision for about a nanosecond before taking extended leave from his school in Shanghai (where he had a job as a teacher) and joining the Bedford expedition up the Yangtze. On this trip he discovered a new species of mouse and two new shrews as well as sending back a small collection of plants to Cambridge. With his first publication "On the road to Tibet" which is reprinted here for the first time he was elected fellow of the Royal geographical society. As a consequence he was asked to collect hardy plants from Yunnan and Tibet to grow in English gardens. He brought back about 200 different species including 22 new to science. He went on around 25 expeditions over a period of nearly fifty years, exploring Tibet, North Western China, Burma (Myanmar) and Assam (now part of North Eastern India.) Among his collections were the first viable seed of Meconopsis betonicifolia, the Himalayan blue poppy (first discovered by Pére Delavay), Primula florindae the giant cowslip (named after his first wife Florinda née Norman-Thompson) and Rhododendron wardii, a yellow flowered species. On his 68th birthday, Frank climbed to over 11,000 feet on Tagulam bum and had his last ever panoramic view of high mountains including Ka Karpo Razi "Burma's icy mountain". By now his age was catching up on him and he was exhausted after a five hour march, as compared to 1911 when he was "tired after 11 hours marching in the rain". He did however go on another expedition in 1956. Between trips he holidayed in Ceylon and returned to Britain for lectures. In 1958 he was having a stroke. He was taken to hospital where he went into a coma and was transferred to the Atkinson Morley in Wimbledon. Two days later he died, aged 72.
