First Edition. BUCKE AND O'CONNOR AS SEEN THROUGH THEIR LETTERS / A PAPER PRESENTED BY HENRY S. SAUNDERS AT THE WHITMAN FELLOWSHIP MEETING IN NEW YORK ON MAY 31ST, 1915, Original Carbon Typescript bound by Saunders in brown boards and tan cloth spine consisting of 13 leaves, one of which has a tipped in illustration of Whitman and another, the frontis, with tipped in original photos of both Richard Maurice Bucke & William Douglas Rogers, who along with Whitman, are the subjects of this presentation. This unique item is not only SIGNED by Saunders on the last leaf of text, but also bears a nice holographic inscription to Horace Traubel by Saunders as well on the front end-paper. Traubel was a late confident and biographer of Whitman, visiting him nearly daily the last 4 years of the poets life. He also carried on the Whitman tradition and became one of three Whitman literary executors (another being Richard Maurice Bucke mentioned above). All in all a spectacular souvenir of a most important literary event that occurred just a hundred years ago. From the library of the former premier Walt Whitman collector, bibliophile and philanthropist, Charles Feinberg.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. [216pp, 2 guarded plate leaves (one with added slip)]: xiv, 202 (last leaf blank); blocked sand-grain terra-cotta linen gilt-stamped on spine; 208 x 137 x 23 mm. The author's first book (preceded by a pamphlet), with subsidiary imprint on tp: "Toronto, Ont.: Willing & Williamson"; Canadian issue with "Willing & / Williamson" at heel of spine. Note that both issues bear the subsidiary Canadian imprint on the title-page, while the US primary issue has the Putnam imprint on the spine. With printed dedication: "I dedicate this book to the man who inspired it -- to the man who of all men past and present that I have known has the most exalted moral nature -- to Walt Whitman". Whitman's celebrated visit to Dr Bucke in London Ontario a year later (1880), resulted in part from this dedication. Ex libris, Dr Joseph Workman (1805-94), with his fountain ink autograph neat on pastedown: "J. Workman MD / July 1879 / C. Lancet". The author's pioneering counterpart, in his role as second Superintendent of the Provincial Lunatic Asylum in Toronto (1853-75) -- after Dr John Scott (1850-3) -- Dr Workman held that it was the patient's physical well-being which would lead to improved morality (in harmony with the author's third chapter: 'The Physical Basis of the Moral Nature'). The Toronto Asylum, 999 Queen West, which opened in 1850 (with 211 beds), preceded the erection of the London Asylum for the Insane by 20 years (1870), where the author was Medical Superintendent (1877-1900). In fact it was Dr Workman who proposed the erection of the London Asylum (in his Annual Report of 1865), in the hope of relieving overcrowding at his own hospital. His pencil notes throughout the text add insight to the development of physiological & occupational therapies (which Bucke conceivably adopted from Workman, though he is not mentioned in the text). The subscript "C. Lancet" beneath the autograph refers to The Canada Lancet; A Monthly Journal of Medical & Surgical Science, Criticism and News, to which Dr Workman was a regular contributor. The issue for July 1879 (Vol XI No 11) includes articles by him (which I haven't been able to access) lending to the distinct possibility that this copy may have been sent for review. Subsequently inscribed in ink on ffe: "In the Osler Library / McGill University [the author's alma mater, 1858-62] #4611 / To Dr E.L. Williams / In appreciation of his / countless kindnesses to so / many of my boys. / Sincerely / J.W. Crane / April 1949". Signed again (in ink) at head of tp by J.W. Crane. A noted bibliophile, Dr James Wellington Crane (1877-1959) was Lecturer on Therapeutics at the University of Western Ontario at London (1913), Professor of Pharmacy (till 1934) & acting Dean of the Medical School (1927-9). His book donations form the basis of the J.W. Crane Memorial Library at the Geriatric Study Centre in Toronto (1962), & J.W. Crane Memorial Library of Gerontology and Geriatrics at Deer Lodge Centre (affiliated with the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg). He was also a founding member of the Osler Society (1927). The recipient of this historic association copy was either a noted physician in London Ontario, or possibly Dr Louis Edwin Williams of St Thomas (who interned at Rockwood Asylum for the Criminally Insane at Kingston, 1913). A nice unfoxed copy with hinges & joints intact. An 8.5cm single-column clipping is tipped to the rear endleaf (verso), headed: "Bucke Collection of Whitman Mss Sold" (with ink date added, "May 1935"). There are also two ink sums at the foot of the last printed page ("188.26" & "428.26"); ink dates beneath the author's name on tp ("1837-1902"); & an ink inventory number at head of ffe ("B.O.#4611"); none of which appear to be institutional. There are no library marks, stamps or codes in evidence. A superlative association provenance with regard to the early history of mental health in Canada.
