Condition: VG PB 16 pages of ads at back. Photos of Indians 108+ yrs (illustrator). "Some Old California Indians" There were about 50,000 Indians in Alta (upper) California when in 1769 Padre Junipera Serra wended his way over the San Diego hills to found the first Franciscan mission of the Catholic church of Spain, for the care and conservation of the Indians of what subsequently became the state of California. The outcasts of Spanish society to this province in the Presidio or the Mission soldiery, soon contaminated the Indians with a vile disease, and by this plague they were swept to their death in unnumbered thousands, so that the extermination of their race began with the advent of the Catalonian and the Castilian. "Life on the Enterprise" by a cadet in the Massachusetts Nautical Training School. The school is a floating institution, and the schoolhouse is known as the steam sloop of war Enterprise. Her keel was laid in Kittery Navy Yard in 1875, and she was launched three years later. The ship contains six wrought iron boilders, Scotch, with return fire, and has two furnaces to each boiler. Her engines are compound, condensing, back-acting marine engines, and she has what is know as fuel sail. "Bicycle racing has become a very important branch of sport, or rather has grown to be one of the most important of sports. It has its own ethics, its own following. It has grown with the same startling rapidity as the popularity of the bicycle itself, and now in the beginning of the year 1897, is greater than ever before.".
