Every abridgement of the journals has maintained this rough form~until now. This landmark edition corrects the famous misspellings and poor grammar, retaining the essential text while for the first time making it easy to read. Featuring an expedition map, sketches from the original volumes, and a new introduction and afterword, this edition brings to life the epic grandeur of the greatest adventure in American history. THE IDEA OF AN EXPEDITION to the Pacific Ocean had burned in the heart of Meriwether Lewis for at least a decade before Thomas Jefferson negotiated the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803. When the American flag was finally raised over St. Louis in 1804, Meriwether Lewis and almost certainly his friend and fellow army officer William Clark were in attendance. They would soon set out from St. Louis to explore this newly acquired territory on the adventure of a lifetime. Jefferson instructed the pair to travel the length of the Missouri River, find a route across the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific, contact Indian tribes, take latitudinal and longitudinal readings, gather specimens of flora and fauna, make maps, and keep journals. The Corps of Discovery, as the expedition would come to be known, would in the next two years fill in gaping blank spaces on the map of the United States. They would gather thousands of never~before~seen specimens including the grizzly bear and the condor, meet dozens of Indian tribes, and record the wonders of the unspoiled United States in the pages of their journals. Lewis or Clark wrote every single day, and their journals present a rich tapestry of natural wonders, high adventure, and the grueling, daily toil of moving an expedition across vast unknown regions of the United States. Upon their triumphant return in 1806, Lewis and Clark's names ascended into the pantheon of great explorers, where they remain in the company of Cook, Magellan, and Columbus. Painstakingly edited by Anthony Brandt, the text emerges fresh and clear, full of the adventure and expectation, hardship, and even boredom as the Corps grows weary of life in the winter camps, waiting to strike out once again on the trail West. The journals of Lewis and Clark constitute the first American epic, and reading them in their entirety delivers a new appreciation of the vision and achievement of the most ambitious expedition ever undertaken in the United States.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1809 Lewis & Clark Expedition 1st ed Travels Missouri Sioux INDIANS Americana The Lewis and Clark Expedition, the most famous Americana expansion voyage, was recorded in journals and printed for the public to know just how impressive this journey was. This 1809, first appearance of the contents of the Lewis and Clark journals, is the best work we have on the countries described, and its republications would be an acceptable service. (Sabin) Literature of Lewis and Clark says of this edition: the first in a long and mostly related series of unauthorized published accounts of the expedition. Field s report on this work, however, is the most thorough. it possesses much interest, as it contains some documents not published in any other edition. Among them are a description of the manners and customs of the Missouri Indians; a statistical view of the Northwester tribes; historical sketches of several Indian tribes of Louisiana; observations on the voyage of William Dunbar and Dr. Hunter extracted from their journals, and a vocabulary of the languages of some of the tribes of Indians. This 1809 Longman edition was published in London and, according to Howes, is a counterfeit edition. However, Sabin notes that it contains information not found in other editions.
