Paperback. Condition: VG. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Very nice clean copy. PREFACE China House Gallery has now presented twenty-four exhibitions on different themes of classical Chinese art. For this our 25th exhibit, we are * delighted to be able to offer a glimpse of the early development of China's initial art form, ceramics. We are very grateful to Clarence Shangraw, the senior curator of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco for putting together this exhibition devoted to the "Origins of Chinese Ceramics" and for preparing an extremely erudite catalog which promises to be the definitive statement, for some time to come, on the Chinese ceramics of the neolithic and early historical periods. We thank the museums and individuals, both in this country and abroad, who are lending their prized pieces to China House Gallery for this first exhibition in the West ever to be devoted exclusively to the early development of Chinese ceramics. The stature and prestige achieved by China House Gallery over the past thirteen years is due in no small part to our Art Committee, now under the chairmanship of Gordon B. Washburn, which assiduously oversees the selection of exhibit themes and guest curators. The Sponsors of China House Gallery, under the leadership of JohnM. Crawford, Jr., also deserve a great deal of credit for their continuing interest and support; while the loyal, dedicated members of our Gallery Committee and their chairman, Mrs. Fred C. Bael, help to make each exhibition interesting and enjoyable for innumerable visitors. We are grateful to our decent Marie-Helene Weill for her especially stimulating lecture programs; to Cleo Nichols for the extremely imaginative setting he has devised for these very old ceramics; to LeMar Terry for his lighting which provides a dramatic framework for the fragile pieces; and to Francoise Boas for designing a most beautiful catalog. We cannot conclude without expressing appreciation for the efforts of Amy V. McEwen, Associate Director of China House Gallery, who once again has helped make it possible for us to present a very unique exhibition; Gloria Seavers, Executive Assistant to the President, who is an invaluable aide to the gallery program; and to Barry I. Friedman and Gloria Ma, staff members who have worked diligently to make our gallery program such a success. F. Richard Hsu President, China Institute in America Director, China House Gallery.
