Reissue of the 1907 edition, with a substantial new preface by the editor giving much of interest on "recent results of the labours and researches of admirers of Johnson." This is an important edition as it contains 576 illustrations, facsimiles, and maps, including 13 plates in photogravure. The (London) Times reviewer stated: "The raison d'etre of this edition is its illustrations. Of these there are portraits from authentic originals, views from old prints, autographs, facsimile title-pages. a series of views of Johnson's old haunts. Mr. Ingpen's literary contribution consists of short notes to the pictures, and his industry in collecting illustrative material." From another review: "The appearance of a new edition of the greatest biography in the English language is a literary event of some consequence.
