D. A. Brockett has written an exciting first novel that is based on a murder that took place in the notorious Barbary Coast District of Grand Junction, Colorado in 1937. To this she has added a coming of age story with a spiritual theme. Rose is the daughter of an abusive Italian immigrant and befriends a brash, colorful woman who helps take the place of her dead mother. Rose and Mari's friendship leads to romance, adventure, murder, and finally a new way of life.
