Lehigh Valley: Crossroads of Commerce looks at one of the most dynamic areas in the United States. Pennsylvania s third most populous metropolitan region, the Lehigh Valley has seen rapid growth in recent years. Money magazine has listed two of its communities as Best Places to Live, and indeed the region is drawing new residents from nearby New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. They come for the lower taxes and more affordable housing but also for the Lehigh Valley s fine quality of life. Here are juxtaposed the cultural amenities of three midsize cities against unspoiled rural landscapes. Nationally recognized colleges and universities and world-class medical institutions make their home here. Recreational opportunities abound, from skiing to river rafting and much more. The many historical attractions attest to the valley s rich heritage, dating back to colonial times. Through the resiliency, hard work, and determination of its citizenry, the Lehigh Valley survived and even prospered following the demise of a major industry. Since the flames of Bethlehem Steel flickered and died, the Lehigh Valley has come back strong. It is now home to cutting-edge manufacturing in areas such as optics, chemical production, and biotechnology. Traditional manufacturers, with names like Mack Trucks and Crayola, give the region name recognition. Indeed, the Lehigh Valley has assumed a key position in the nation s manufacturing sector as well as in the biomedical and transportation sectors. The region is also poised to become a major player in the Wall Street West backup system for the nation s financial markets. The Lehigh Valley is exceptionally business friendly, providing assistance for relocation, start-up, or retooling for improved efficiency. Local colleges and universities prepare the workers of tomorrow while also helping businesses meet current needs for training and expertise. From the skilled workforce to the community life to the lush, rolling hills, the Lehigh Valley has it all.
