From AudioFile:
British actor Bill Wallis appropriately narrates this panoramic drama, which focuses on the struggles of an upper-class family over half a century. With such a wide array of characters Wallis is able to present a blend of emotions and atmospheres, from stuffiness to humility. Most impressive is his treatment of the German characters at the forefront of WWII, a setting that places the listener actively in the middle of the early Nazi movement. Through tones of naiveté and somberness, Wallis illustrates the growth of central character Alec Allan, from his young, rebellious days to his later days of wisdom and experience. By the end of the novel, the listener can sense the loss felt by the family as its members are dispersed over several continents without the political power they once had.
