When two young female artists are murdered in what look like ritualistic killings, the pressure is on to find a highly professional murderer. The arrival of the father of one of the victims, millionaire businessman Davor Boras, brings in the big guns of the Home Office, MI5 and the CIA. It isn't long before Deputy Chief Constable Bob Skinner gets called back to the front line in a case that is as deadly as it is mysterious. There's too much at stake; there's going to be bloodshed - and Skinner's men are at risk of getting caught in the crossfire.

About the Author:
Quintin Jardine was born once upon a time in the West - of Scotland rather than America, but still he grew to manhood as a massive Sergio Leone fan. On the way there he was educated, against his will, in Glasgow, where he ditched a token attempt to study law for more interesting careers in journalism, government propaganda, and political spin-doctoring. After a close call with the Brighton Bomb in 1984, he moved into the even riskier world of media relations consultancy, before realising that all along he had been training to become a crime writer. Now, forty novels later, he never looks back.

Along the way he has created/acquired an extended family in Scotland and Spain. Everything he does is for them.

From AudioFile:
James Bryce is an old hand at these densely populated, masterfully crafted police procedurals by Jardine. In this 17th book to take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, the usual protagonist, DCC Bob Skinner, doesn't make an appearance until late in the book. This is not only a story of multiple murder victims found around Edinburgh, it's also a chance to catch up on the personal lives of the many interwoven characters--their love affairs, promotions, and new families. The story builds slowly, which works well if you're just finding you're way to this series. Once Skinner arrives, the tension ratchets up. Bycre approaches this material like he's greeting old friends. He performs with calm deliberation that is a perfect match for this carefully plotted mystery.
