From Booklist:
Endangered species is a phrase we often hear, so often that we despair of saving any of the planet's wild plants or animals. And yet, there are conservation groups all over the world working to protect wildlife and their habitats for future generations. To showcase the work of these conservationists and to draw attention to some of the threatened animals and plants they work with, naturalist Tait asked 99 conservation groups to nominate a species or habitat that needs saving (the author chose one more to make an even 100). In a two-page spread, each species is illustrated by a color photograph. Several short paragraphs describe the species and discuss the reasons for its decline. A "fact box" lists common and scientific names, conservation status, population in the wild, life span, geographic range, and threats. The logo of the sponsoring conservation organization is also included. Another box explains what the reader can do--usually suggesting support of the sponsoring organization, but sometimes including practical advice. The selected species illustrate not only the widespread problem of potential extinctions but also the possibilities for their salvation. Nancy Bent
