"It's like dyin' old men all over the world will tell you - when you get aged and rackety and think back across your entire lifespan, why it ain't the ones you do, you regret, it's the ones you don't." Lunch Pumphrey is talking about sex, but he applies his philosophy to all aspects of life - which includes dealing with anyone who has the dim wit to double cross him and the bad luck to stick around for the consequences. And that's why old John X. Shade is on the lam, his nubile young wife having run off with $47,000 of Lunch Pumphrey's ill gotten gains, leaving John X. behind with an empty safe and a wise-ass daughter, the fruit of his middle age. Given a certified sociopath like Lunch on his tail, an empty bank account and hands too shaky to hold the pool cue that once made his fame and fortune, John X. has only one way to go: Home to the first wife and three sons - now grown - he abandoned years ago, back to the steamy bayou town of St Bruno.

From Publishers Weekly:
In this zesty, evocative novel of Cajun country, the third tale set in seamy St. Bruno (after Under the Bright Lights and Muscle fo r the Wing ), Woodrell reunites the three Shade brothers with their dissolute father. Aged rake and reprobate John X. Shade returns to his native Louisiana bayous, where he reviews his checkered past. Vengeful sociopath Lunch Pumphrey is hot on his trail, bent on recovering $47,000 stored in John X.'s safe, but Shade's young wife has absconded with the money in order to launch her singing career, leaving their daughter, toughly precocious Etta, in her father's care. Though nefarious Lunch is the instrument of his downfall, Shade's real conflict is with his own waning history--the people he ruined, the family he abandoned, the lifestyle he can no longer sustain (he is too shaky to wield his custom-made pool cue) and the young girl he now must protect. "It may be that all I ever did with my life was to the bad, but, damn, son, I sure would like to do it all again," he tells his oldest son, Tip. Lunch becomes the deadly agent of Shade's own karma. The story is authentically gritty and profane, and chock-full of winning details: Lunch numbering his Salems and smoking seven a day; a cuckolded husband removing his dentures to fight Shade but replacing them to enunciate his insults. Brimming with clever dialogue and quotable Cajun wit, it's an irresistible narrative.

From Library Journal:
John X. Shade is a pool hustler on the wrong side of 60 with shaky hands and failing eyesight. But these are not the worst of his problems. His young wife has financed her move to Europe by relieving local sociopath Lunch Pumphrey of $47,000 and left John X. and their ten-year-old daughter to try and make amends. The most prudent course of action is to smack Lunch on the head with a whiskey bottle and hit the road. The road leads John X. back to the hometown and family he abandoned years ago, when he was still the most handsome man in St. Bruno, Louisiana. With Lunch on his trail and jealous husbands eager to settle old scores, John X. conjures up a vision of his past where women, money, and good times were lined up like so many balls on the table--and John X. could still run them all. Highly recommended for all libraries.
