From the Author:
Traditional approaches to solving the problems of climate change and energy resource depletion have been too narrow, coming primarily from a scientific or economic viewpoint. Small Change, Big Gains: Reflections of an Energy Entrepreneur demonstrates the value of employing a more holistic and business-based approach to these global issues. I did not want to publish just another report on climate change--there are enough of those already. I wanted to answer the question, "How are we going to mitigate climate change and do so in a way that is viable, sustainable, and wealth-producing?"
In reviewing literature on climate change, I realized a meaningful solution didn't necessarily emerge from the way the climate crisis was being characterized. I recognized a need to develop a global energy model using existing energy and climate data, and to then put a financial calculator on top of it. Doing so, I thought, would allow us to look at the data from a new, more holistic perspective and in a way that would help us begin to explore potential sustainable solutions to the climate and energy crises. I was right, and the surprising conclusions from this modeling exercise form the basis for Small Change, Big Gains: Reflections of an Energy Entrepreneur.
About the Author:
Tom H. Stoner, Jr. writes from the perspective of an energy executive with 30 years of experience in the C-Suite, in the boardroom, and as an investor in renewable energy assets. After graduating from Hampshire College (B.A.) and the London School of Economics (M.S.) in the 1980s, Mr. Stoner spent his professional career leading three companies in the clean technology space, including one of the original CleanTech venture funds backed by international development banks, including the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), a division of the Inter-American Development Bank. Tom served as CEO of two publicly traded companies: Econergy International PLC, a renewable energy independent power producer (IPP) traded on the London AIM market; and Evergreen Energy, a clean coal technology company traded on the NYSE Arca Exchange.
Small Change, Big Gains: Reflections of an Energy Entrepreneur, is Tom Stoner's first book. Says Mr. Stoner, "When it comes to energy and the economy, businesses are powerful change agents, and so I wrote this book with the corporate boardroom in mind. The methodology I introduce in this book shows how to align stakeholder values to build wealth for everyone--for energy investors, suppliers, users, and for environmental stewards. That's a solution that's sustainable for industry, for people, and for the planet. For business executives, this book offers a new approach to building prosperity and minimizing risk. For energy users--and we are all energy users--this book shows how we can build an energy system that provides cheap and abundant electricity while also promoting economic, social, and environmental health."
