Grade 2-4-This biography of the Suquamish and Duwamish chief briefly describes his life before paraphrasing the Funeral Oration he gave in 1854. However, Seattle did not make this speech at the treaty signing as the book suggests, and no notes or sources are provided for quotes or thoughts attributed to him. The author's "free adaptation" of Seattle's words reads more like a Disney song than a dignified speech ("Have you ever smelled the sweet breeze/or the damp, fresh fragrance/of the earth in the afternoon?"). Many of the illustrations feature Plains tribesmen rather than Natives of the Northwest. Save your money for a better biography of Chief Seattle.
