JULIA SZABO pens the "Pets" column for the Sunday New York Post. She is a frequent contributor to House Beautiful, Country Living, and Departures. Szabo shares her home with five rescued dogs and several rescued cats.

Photographer STANFORD T. WAN began his photo career as a fashion photographer. Always an animal lover, he has worked on projects with the ASPCA and has photographed dogs for Town & Country magazine.

Dogs adopted from the Humane Society star in this playful book, which is a cross between a shopping catalogue, a pet owner’s guide and a fawning look at pampered pups. After introductory pieces from Szabo (who writes the "Pets" column for the New York Post), Elisabeth Röhm and Virginia Chipurnoi (president of the Humane Society of New York), the writing consists mainly of fun trivia (why do dogs lick their owners?), helpful hints (don’t let your dog sleep between you and your partner) and suggestions for sumptuous dog beds one can buy. The photos are adorable, ranging from yawning mutts sprawled on pillows to elegant breeds lounging, human-like on lawn chairs. Since the book is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the New York Humane Society, with a percentage of the proceeds benefiting it, the project naturally has some star power; designer Todd Oldham’s Jack Russell terrier sleeps in style on a stack of Target corduroy cushions, and Law and Order cast members cuddle with up-for-adoption dogs. Even canine lovers who aren’t looking for more pet accessories (or can’t afford the ones featured here) won’t be able to suppress a smile when perusing the cute photos collected here. The captions maintain the light, fun attitude of the book, which does its utmost to encourage readers to adopt a dog as soon as possible.
