Another charming rhyming picture book from the celebrated team of Hazel Hutchins and Ruth Ohi.

Jeremy tries to hide among the many toy monsters in his bedroom. But when his father recognizes him, they begin a lovingly simple and repetitious game of verbal hide-and-seek.

"If I became a moss green frog
Beside a singing creek,
Like every other moss green frog
That you might ever meet --
If I became a moss green frog,
Would you know me then?"
"I'd know you anywhere," said his father.

Jeremy's playful imagination skips through other possible disguises and hideaways: an octopus beneath the ocean deep; a sheep upon a mountainside; a cloud drifting high above; a single blade of grass in the yard below; a monster dressed in monster clothes.

After each poetic question Jeremy's father replies reassuringly, "I'd know you."

And Jeremy laughs and says, "I'd know you too."

Warm, soft watercolor illustrations depict with gentle humor the many incarnations of Jeremy.

A comforting, reassuring book that children and parents will enjoy reading together.

About the Author:

Hazel Hutchins, the recipient of numerous awards, is a master of the gentle, humorous story for the very young. She has written over 25 books for children, including Two So Small (2000) and One Duck (1999). Hazel lives with her family in the heart of Canada's Rocky Mountains.

Ruth Ohi has illustrated many of Hazel Hutchins' picture books. Her joyous, sensitive, and humorous illustrations are familiar to families all over North America. This is Ruth's 30th book with Annick Press! She lives with her husband and two daughters in Toronto.

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-K-A young boy challenges his father's ability to recognize him when the child suggests taking on various disguises. "`If I became a sheep/upon a mountainside,/one of many thousand sheep,/a woolly, moving tide-/If I became a sheep,/would you know me then?' `I'd know you,' said his father." Watercolor artwork, with plenty of white space, depicts a loving father and son in the lower right-hand corner of many spreads, while the rest of the picture reveals what the boy imagines he'll become-a frog, octopus, cloud, single blade of grass, and monster. One quibble: the phrasing and rhyme scheme of the questions seem unrealistic for a child who appears to be between two and three years of age. One still can't beat Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny (HarperCollins, 1942), Barbara Joosse's Mama, Do You Love Me? (Chronicle, 1991), and Sam McBratney's Guess How Much I Love You (Candlewick, 1995) for tales of reassurance. However, this book does have its place, if only because it's a story of enduring love starring a playful boy and his affectionate father.
