From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1-This easy-to-read book begins with a note to parents about how to encourage beginning readers. The "Word Bank" (a white banner that runs across the tops of the pages and lists vocabulary words used in the story) is also introduced along with additional activities. A bear is going fishing and although he dreams about catching the "biggest fish in the lake," he reels in a sneaker, a shirt, and then a rubber tube. Finally, something large seems to be wiggling at the end of his line, but when he pulls it in, it's only a tiny minnow. The colorful, childlike artwork shows a beautiful woodsy lake that seems at odds with the garbage that is pulled out of the water. Also, it is a little off putting that the bear's bait worm has facial expressions and climbs up and down the fishing line. This book is unlikely to find a use as a supplement to classroom units, and it will have limited appeal to beginning readers.-Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City
