A fact of vital interest to the students of the small town is the decreasing size of the family. The average size of four hun dred thirty-two families studied in Belleville is just three and one half members. Children under fourteen are scarcely more than one for a family. Of course, the drift to the cities and the number of aged couples whose children have married are in part responsible. But a careful study of the records shows that the small size of the family is largely due to the smaller number of children in the family.
