We have a proverb to the effect that "seeing is believing." What we usually mean when we quote it, is, that the only sure proof that a thing is there is that you see it. And obviously, there is an order of things in which there could be no better test than the test of our eyes. Suppose, for example, that for some reason or other I am sitting in suspense waiting for some news which is going to have a momentous influence upon my entire life. Let it be a case where, if I get a letter, it means that all is well; but if I get no letter it means that the very worst has happened. In every life there are moments of the kind. Now, suppose I have sent a friend to find out for me once for all whether that letter has come.
