When I was diagnosed with cancer over four years ago, I was fortunate to have been prepared by my own training in energy medicine, prayers and many modalities which I discovered on my own and I am certain that all those were instrumental in prolonging my health. None of those modalities were discussed with me by my oncologist, an excellent physician. It seems to me that there comes a time when the physician must become a healer and make it known to the patient what else is available for the well being of the patient. Alternative healing and complimentary medicine are in my opinion still in their infancy although we have made strides in incorporating those into the healing process. I have met with staff members of the hospital where I am a patient and discussed and proposed , from a cancer patient's view, what is needed, from playing relaxing music in the waiting room to apprising the patient of how he could be proactive in his own treatment.
Patient education and avenues to be taken for one's well being are so well outlined and discussed in this wonderful book and I feel strongly that it should find its way at least into the waiting room of oncologists as well as other specialists deal with long term illnesses.
The first is by self-healing, through the use of relaxation, meditation, imagery, and many other approaches. Each of these is described, explained and supplemented with exercises that you can easily do. It is through the doing of these exercises that you will best learn what self-healing can offer you for stress, pain (physical and psychological), depression, relationship issues, and many other problems.
The second way to self-healing is through the numerous complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) therapies, from acupuncture to yoga. Each of these is detailed and explained in this book, with many suggestions for how they can help you find your way to a fuller, more healthy and happy life.
CAM therapies have not been used a lot in most conventional medical practices. In many cases they are much gentler and safer than conventional medical treatments. This is an important consideration in choosing treatments for your problems, because conventional medicine has been shown to be the fourth leading cause of death in the US.
Dr. Benor does not suggest avoiding medical treatment. He is a strong advocate for Integrative care, blending the best of both conventional and CAM approaches.
Many of the CAM therapies involve biological energies that are as yet not understood within conventional western medicine. Dr. Benor presents evidence to confirm that these bioenergies contribute to health and illness in a variety of ways, as provided by the spectrum of CAM therapies. He also reviews evidence showing that environmental energies can influence your health - for better or worse.
This encyclopedic "How To" book should be on the shelf of anyone who is exploring the fields of health and healing.
