A Visit from the Leopard: Memories of a Ugandan Childhood - Hardcover

Grade 3-5-This story is based on the author's childhood memories. It takes place in an eastern Ugandan village where eight-year-old Mbiro goes about her daily routine of doing chores and attending school. The child is teased by classmates, witnesses an encounter between a leopard and her grandmother, and is saddened when the villagers must kill the animal. Mbiro and her grandmother are well-developed characters, and the narrative provides details of clothing and family structure. However, the writing style is dry and some of the dialogue is stilted. A few uninspiring black-and-white pencil drawings appear throughout.
