From Publishers Weekly:
Wilkinson portrays three generations of a familyincluding blacks and whiteswho live on a small dirt farm in North Carolina. The focus is on Cale, a boy who is fearfully loved by the members of his family, but who, as he grows, "clashes with the rigidity of his mother and with his circumstances in the South," PW stated.
