From Booklist:
If present trends continue, Mr. Bluebird may not be sitting on anyone's shoulder. Loss of habitat, increased competition for food, and the poisons sprayed on lawns to make them green and pretty all threaten this songbird that is common only in the western hemisphere. In what amounts to a bluebird awareness book, Toops spotlights both the species' natural history and what certain private citizens are doing to ensure its future. The natural history chapters are pretty run-of-the-mill, but the nine small ones on what those citizens are doing are fascinating. Most of their activity involves installing boxes in which the birds may lay eggs and raise young; in many cases, this simple measure has lured the bluebird back to areas from which it has been absent for more than a half century. Color photos profusely illustrate the book, and because the bluebird is a very pretty, make it quite spectacular. Toops and those she profiles deserve a round of applause for trying to save the no-longer-so-common bluebird. Jon Kartman
Review:
". . . informative, comprehensive and interesting. It is the best that I have seen and I am sure will be the standard text for many years to come. The areas covered, references and index will be invaluable for future researchers. It was so interesting I couldn't put it down until I had read it all." -- Earl Gillis, the Western Bluebird Recovery Project
"Highly recommended." Birders World. Anyone interested in bluebirds will want a copy of this book." -- Wildlife Activist
