Gr 5 Up--The Lees provide a good basic understanding of what causes these natural phenomena and how to stay safe when they occur. For those teens unlucky enough to experience them, the book also lists positive, helpful ways to overcome the stress and feelings of loss that usually accompany a diasater. Rather than focusing on the simple relief at surviving, the authors acknowledge the fear, depression, and anger that post-traumatic stress disorder victims often feel. Moe takes a basic, common-sense approach to her subject. She provides good reasons for teens to stay celibate, but the entire book can be summarized by the last three sentences of text: "Abstinence is defined as not participating in sexual intercourse until marriage. Abstinence may mean you don't do romantic kissing, necking, petting, masturbation, or outercourse. Your version of abstinence is your decision." This title is a better choice for students who are considering personal choices than for those who are writing reports. Both books include full-color and black-and-white photos. Directory of organizations and lists for further reading (no journal articles) are appended.
