In this Graphic Classics version of a famous Shakespearean tragedy, mortal enmity exists between the powerful houses of Montague and Capulet, but Romeo, the Montagues' son, and Juliet, daughter of the Capulets, are in love. Theirs is a romance destined to end in tragedy. Graphic Classics are graphic novel versions of immortal novels and plays, presented in a way to help make great literary works accessible to students, and encourage boys and girls to discover the joy of reading the masterworks in their original form. Titles in this series tell absorbing, fast-paced stories dramatized with high-quality color illustrations. Each Graphic Classics title includes a thumbnail biography of the author, a list of his or her important works, a timeline of historic events that helped inspire the story, general notes, and an index. Graphic Classics titles are available in both paperback and hardcover editions.

From the Inside Flap:
(back cover)
"But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun."

When teenagers Romeo and Juliet meet at a masked ball, it's love at first sight. But Romeo is a Montague and Juliet a Capulet -- and the two families are sworn enemies. Watch tragedy unfold as the "star-crossed" lovers try to overcome the obstacles ahead of them.

Perhaps the most famous love story of all time, Shakespeare's classic is brought to life in this exciting graphic novel.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9–This title follows the series format. A two-page illustration with an accompanying quotation introduces the play: O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I'll no longer be a Capulet. The story is encapsulated into panels with a phrase under each one that explains the action taking place therein. Full-color realistic art, mainly close-ups of the speakers, with accompanying speech balloons that quote brief snippets of famous Shakespearean lines, reinforce the stage-drama format as well as the emotional story elements. Each spread begins with a headline, cueing readers to setting and major plot elements that they will encounter in each short segment. Footnotes define unfamiliar words, explain some of the wordplay, and offer some background material to enhance readers' understanding. Additional helpful material includes a cast of characters, biographical information on the playwright, and background information on the play and its setting. This graphic adaptation would probably be most useful in classroom settings, providing a basic introduction to this time-honored tragic story of two star-crossed lovers.–Barbara M.
