"A multicultural dimension to the words and pictures gives this title universal application, as life throughout the world is celebrated."
- School Library Journal

In September 2001, New York poetry anthologist Georgia Heard was asked to compile a collection of "poems of comfort" for schoolchildren in lower Manhattan. Soon afterward, Candlewick Press approached a number of well-known illustrators to ask if they'd like to contribute to the project. Within weeks, eighteen artists had volunteered their talents to illustrate one poem each.

The result was this timeless volume of life-affirming poetry. Now reformatted with an elegant new cover, this collection is as diverse as it is powerful, as beautiful as it is full of heart. From Emily Dickinson's " 'Hope' is the thing with feathers" to Langston Hughes's "Dreams," from Walt Whitman to Georgia Heard herself, here is an outstanding selection of poets and poems, matched by a stellar array of artists and art.

About the Author:
Georgia Heard has published two children’s poetry books and was a
contributor to SEEING THE BLUE BETWEEN: ADVICE AND INSPIRATION FOR YOUNG POETS, compiled by Paul B. Janeczko. She is also the author of three books on teaching and writing poetry.
From Booklist:
Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. To offer children consolation after the sorrow of September 11, Heard has collected 18 well-known poems that speak of grief and comfort, and each poem is opposite an original, full-page illustration by a picture-book artist. There's no bibliotherapy, but the images in both the words and the pictures are about fear, loss, and connection. Ann Turner's poem "The Beginning," which celebrates New York, appears opposite Chris Raschka's dynamic painting of the view from Manhattan Bridge. Wendell Berry's "Peace of Wild Things" is about the comfort of solitary places. Perhaps the most riveting double-page spread features Karla Kuskin's elemental poem of friendship ("I think I could do anything at all, / if you were there"), perfectly matched by William Steig's ink-and-crayon drawing of a boy and his dog. There are great poems by Langston Hughes, Lillian Morrison, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Gwendolyn Brooks, and more. In most cases the art doesn't overwhelm the words and both will get children talking about the things to hold onto when times are hard. Hazel Rochman
