Lidia Bastianich first learned how to cook in Italy when she was a little girl. She now owns four restaurants in New York City, one in Pittsburgh, and one in Kansas City. She has three television shows on PBS, including Lidia's Italy, and is the author of numerous bestselling cookbooks and the children's book, Nonna Tell Me a Story: Lidia's Christmas Kitchen. In addition, Lidia has her own line of pasta sauces, a winery in Italy, and loves to cook with her five grandchildren. She lives in Long Island, NY. Renée Graef has illustrated over 70 books for children, including the Kirsten series in the American Girl collection and many of the My First Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. In this companion to Nonna Tell Me a Story (2010), chef and television personality Bastianich welcomes her grandchildren to the kitchen to plan a surprise birthday party for Nonna (the author’s mother). The group discusses favorite foods (and how they don’t always go together), and Bastianich reminisces about her own childhood in Italy, emphasizing the importance of serving fresh, seasonal foods. Finally, they visit a farmer’s market to select ingredients for pasta primavera. Graef’s soft-focused, full-color artwork features rosy-cheeked, earnest children always on their best behavior. Meanwhile, the 18 appended, adult-focused Italian recipes include foods with much child appeal. They are arranged seasonally and include practical suggestions for child participation.
