A Robin Light thriller
Three weeks before Christmas, times are even harder than usual in Syracuse, New York. The sensible thing would be to declare bankruptcy and close down her exotic-pet store. Instead, Robin is working in a bar two nights a week, which is where she meets Freddy Sanchez.
When Freddy turns up dead in a burnt-out house two days later, Freddy's mother, Bea, wants Robin's boss, Ian Yates, to look into it. Ian owes Bea one, and Robin owes Ian one, so guess which amateur detective ends up investigating the local gangs . . .
The thing is, she's not so sure they have anything to do with it. And not only that there's also the question of how Freddy came to acquire a rare breed of dog, of which, according to the local breeder, there are only two in the area. Neither of them are registered to Freddy. But why would either of the respected local businessmen who own a labradoodle have anything to do with Freddy's death?

About the Author:
Block lives with her three sons and a variety of pets.
From Booklist:
Block's (Vanishing Act, 1998; Blowing Smoke, 2001) Robin Light, proprietor of the exotic-pet-store Noah's Ark in Syracuse, New York, is not having a good Christmas season. The store is on the verge of bankruptcy, and she is tending bar in an attempt to keep her business afloat. When teenager Freddy Sanchez shows up at the bar trying to fence stolen goods, bar-owner Ian Yates throws him out. The boy turns up dead a few days later, and Robin must investigate. The police write it off as a gang killing, but Robin is not so sure. Freddy had a very expensive computer and a rare breed of dog, a labradoodle--not the usual wares that he sold on the street. Robin and the colorful characters who inhabit the bar and the pet shop will keep readers interested in the well-constructed plot. She is a welcome addition to the ranks of female detectives.
