Helen Piers has published over 60 books for children, including both picture books and her series of photographic books on looking after pets. Hannah Giffard's parents were both artists. Her books Red Fox and Red Fox on the Move were both shortlisted for the Children's Book of the Year Award. In the 1990s she created an award-winning animation series called "Pablo - the Little Red Fox", based on the Red Fox books and co-produced with Keith Tutt. The series has been shown on BBC television and throughout the world, winning a BAFTA in 2000 for Best International Children's Programme. Hannah lives in Suffolk. PreSchool-Grade 1?Sam takes his large bus on a world tour and picks up an assortment of animal passengers along the way. The likes of "one lonely lion" from South Africa, "three wet walruses" from Canada, and "nine crotchety crocodiles" from Egypt go a long way toward filling the seats until "ten bothersome bumblebees" come on the scene. Giffard's watercolors, done in a bold primitive style, juxtapose a page for counting animals with a facing page depicting the increasingly crowded vehicle. Children will shout the numbers and no doubt join in with the reading aloud of this adventure as its word pattern builds. Unfortunately, the single map is merely decorative and useless for place or animal identification.
