Grade 3-4-- In the form of journal entries, an eight-year-old girl narrates anecdotes about her city neighbors. After introducing her apartment house and its windows on her world, she records six episodes in the daily lives of friends and family. With their vibrant color, frontal planes, skewed perspectives, and reduced detail, the full-page paintings recall the naive style of such artists as Vera B. Williams, Dayal Kaur Khalsa, and Frane Lessac, although these are not quite in the same league as those masters. Even though Hildy's restrained and orderly observations are less than 100 percent convincingly eight-year-old, the book still applies well to exercises in journal-writing, developing powers of observation, and appreciating other people. --Karen Litton, London Public Libraries, Ontario, Canada
