Over 200 brief, well-written entries about the famous and "should-be-famous" are arranged alphabetically into six chronological chapters. An overview of the social, cultural, and historical events introduces each time period, providing background and context for the biographical sketches and achievements that follow. Representation is broad and includes women of many professions, interests, talents, and political points of view. Throughout the book, sidebars present additional information in the form of cameos, quick portraits and singular achievements of subjects not covered by the main text; "Women's Words," quotes and definitions; and "Women's Sphere," facts about women's work and lives. The illustrations, primarily black-and-white photographs and prints, are numerous?usually several to a page. A detailed table of contents and alphabetical and topical indexes allow for easy use.
