Doc Weir and his wife Jeannine might be considered the town's first family.  Doc Weir was the town's principal physician; he was also locally notorious for the circumstances of his sister's death.  Their joy in life was their daughter Amy, a pretty girl who wanted a history of her own.  When Amy fell for a local plumber, Johnny Collins, the Weirs objected.  Amy defied them.
Their marriage appeared to be a happy one.  Amy and Johnny produced a daughter, the well-loved Juny.  Then on a perfect spring day Amy walked out of all their lives, leaving just a note saying, "Gone for mushrooms."
From that day forward the novel's focus is on Juny's efforts to make sense of the world from which her mother has vanished--the frightening resolution of which will propel the  rest of her life.
