From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5-Kent discusses the slave trade, economic issues propelling it, and the contributions of some notable blacks. She relates the reasons that slavery was able to flourish and explains how Native Americans and indentured servants were able to escape being enslaved. The author's concise descriptions of African Americans during a turbulent time in U.S. history are informative and quite stirring, and the book offers a basic understanding of a divisive issue. Santella's title, on the other hand, focuses on one event, conveys the excitement and drama that it aroused, and examines its repercussions. The author also addresses Robinson's legacy, not only to the world of baseball but also to society. Both volumes are illustrated with numerous black-and-white reproductions and photographs.
