From Publishers Weekly:
Israeli journalist Golan discusses Peres's role as Israeli's defense minister in the 1950s, his cultivation of the French military and their aid to the Israeli armed forces. He then traces the political career, first as one of Israel's "political twins" along with Moshe Dayan (contending that Peres built the political power Dayan wielded), then as leader of the Labor party. Peres expected to win the premiership in the 1984 elections, but had to share it with Yitzhak Shamir, each taking a two-year turn. During his tenure Peres succeeded in bringing the Israeli Defense Force out of Lebanon, performed the "economic miracle" of decreasing inflation and took diplomatic initiatives that, according to Golan, restored Israel's reputation as a peace-loving nation. The author often refers to the Israeli public's mistrust of Peres and his undeserved reputation as "a deceiver . . . a man incapable of taking the straight path." In this evasive biography Golan fails to explain adequately the source of that reputation or its validity.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. The only remaining active politician who was present at the creation of the nation of Israel, Simon Peres helped build a country known for its military prowess: tough, dogged, and determined to hold its place in the world. But he also takes much of the responsibility for the dark secret side of Israel; its arms deals, covert intelligence, and closed-door negotiations. Both aspects of this extraordinary man make for a fascinating story, and here, in a remarkably candid and authoritative account by Israeli journalist Matti Golan, we witness the whole man--flawed, ambitious, but awesome in his energy and greatness. Using material gleaned from Peres' private papers as well as his own eyewitness experience covering Israeli politics for over two decades, Matti Golan has produced a vivid, controversial, and exceptionally revealing biography that is also a stirring history of Israel from pre-World War II until present times. Describing a life filled with bitter disappointments as well as triumphs, Matti Golan looks deeply at both Shimon Peres the man and Shimon Peres the leader and contrasts him with Menachem Begin, rival Yitzhak Shamir, and others. The result is an exciting window into the back room of Israel's politics, a riveting human drama, and a brillant political analysis of a country that for many of us remains as much a dream and a promise as a nation.
