We'll Laugh Again - Hardcover

Art Buchwald's column is distributed by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate and appears in more than five hundred newspapers worldwide. Buchwald has written thirty books, including the novel Stella in Heaven. In 1982 he won a Pulitzer Prize for outstanding commentary, and in 1986 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Buchwald is a perennial; he has been a columnist for more than 50 years and a 1982 Pulitzer Prize winner for commentary, whose musings are still featured in more than 500 newspapers. This collection of columns covers the 1990s, full of references to Bill and Hill, downsizing and dot-coms, HMOs and Viagra, and Ken Starr and Monica Lewinsky. Because the book arrives nearly a year after September 11, however, Buchwald has added 18 columns (some serious, but most marked by his trademark wit) from more recent days to the 112 that dissect the earlier period. The title is based on the famous exchange between columnist Mary McGrory and future New York senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan just after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. "We'll never laugh again," McGrory declared. "Mary, we'll laugh again," Moynihan replied, "but we'll never be young again." From one angle, Buchwald's columns are ephemera, poking rather gentle fun at the latest Beltway buzzwords and sacred cows. But that is exactly their value: to remind us of what the talking heads were chattering about 2 or 6 or 10 years ago. Mary Carroll
