Growing up a tough, wild tomboy, swimming, fighting and fishing in the remote Native village of Kitamaat, where the land slips into the green ocean on the northern edge of the world and strange things bubble below the surface, LisaMarie has always been different. Visited by ghosts and shapeshifters, tormented by premonitions, she can't escape the sense that something terrible is waiting for her at the end of the line. Then one day her little brother Jimmy goes missing at sea, and as LisaMarie sits waiting for news, aged nineteen but feeling a hundred, she sorts through the blackest secrets of her damaged life, in search of hope. Wild, sensuous and terrifying, MONKEY BEACH binds our most primal fears to an exquisitely haunting landscape in an unforgettable modern ghost story.

Review:
A graceful and impressive book * Times Literary Supplement * A wild, beautifully crafted story, which terrifies and warms the heart in equal measure * She * The accomplishments of this, her first novel, have made it well worth the wait ... Robinson's depictions of LisamArie's interior and exterior worlds are utterly persuasive. This isnt gothic sensibility at work here, nor sentimental, instead - as the hidden secrets of so many lives are revealed - there is a use of language at once sensuous yet also direct and uncompromising. Wonderfully readable and rereadable * Time Out * Combining pathos with biting humour, each of these beautifully created narratives has a sting * INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY * A young and striking voice - her writing is fresh and often harrowing * OBSERVER * A compelling literary voice ... Monkey Beach is pervaded by a powerful sense of menace, and the haunting spirituality that lurks in the beautiful landscapes of Canada's Pacific coast * Julie Wheelwright, INDEPENDENT * A subtle, brutal and compelling read * Esther Freud, author of HIDEOUS KINKY *
