One of the Soviet Union's most respected photo-journalists, Yuri Rost, gives a fascinating and often moving account of the inter-ethnic war and of the devastating earthquake. 1988 was perhaps the blackest year in Armenian history. Post explains the background to the disaster, both political and natural. This horrifying chronicle to which Rost himself was often a witness is based on first-hand accounts. One of the greatest problems faced by Gorbachev in reforming the Soviet Union was the prospect of the disintegration of the last of the great European empires. One of the most crucial areas was the autonomous region Nagorno Karabakh, an historically Armenian area granted to Azerbaijan by Stalin.

From Publishers Weekly:
Chaos caused by ethnic and territorial strife between Christian Armenians and Muslim Azerbaijani, exacerbated by the 1988 earthquake, is eloquently portrayed by Soviet photo-journalist Rost, who admits to favoring the Armenian cause. In a foreword, Sakharov alludes to politically negative effects the conflict could have on perestroika , which he notes awoke ethnic hostilities repressed by Stalin. Accounts by victims of warfare and earthquake and interviews with leaders of both republics and the U.S.S.R. animate this wrenching report, its drama preserved in an excellent translation. The book is prophetic of the current newsmaking escalation of conflict in Azerbaijan.
