A Short History of the Western Liturgy - Hardcover

In the years since this guide to the history of worship in the Western (Latin) Church was first published in English it has established itself as a standard textbook for all serious students of the subject. In this second edition the original text and very full bibliography remain unchanged, but a short appendix has been added to cover the main developments since the fifth German edition was published in 1965, together with a select supplementary bibliography of works mainly in English.  Contents: Creative beginnings: from the ascension of Jesus to Gregory the Great; Franco-German leadership: from Gregory the Great to Gregory VII; Dissolution, elaboration, reinterpretation, and misinterpretation: from Gregory VII to the Council of Trent; Rigid unification in the liturgy and rubricism: from the Council of Trent to the Second Vatican Council.  Theodor Klauser (1894 - 1984) was a German Catholic theologian, church historian and archaeologist. He taught at the University of Bonn for many years but it was only after the early end of the Tausendjähriges Reich that he was able to succeed his teacher, Franz Joseph Dölger, who had died in 1940. In 1955, he established the Dölger Institüt zur Enforschung der Spätantike of which he was director until 1972. He remained general editor of the Reallexikon für Antike und Christentum until his death.  Robert John Halliburton (1935 - 2004) was an English priest and theologian who served as a Canon and Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral between 1989 and 2003. He studied for a bachelor's degree at Selwyn College, Cambridge, reading Modern Languages for Part I of the Tripos but transferring to Theology for Part II. After graduating, he completed his obligatory National Service he began simultaneously studying for a Ph.D. at Keble College, Oxford, and preparing for ordination into the Church of England at St Stephen's House. His thesis, for which he was supervised by Canon F. L. Cross, was entitled "Augustine and the Monastic Life".
