The Blackburn Prize has been awarded annually since 1978 for outstanding British and American plays written by women. Seven works, from Marsha Norman, Wendy Kesselman, Lynn Siefert, Tina Howe, Anne Devlin, Caryl Churchill, and Lucy Gannon--all past winners or runners-up--are collected here. They represent a wide variety of voices, styles, and subjects. There is no question about their excellence, but the principle used to choose them is unclear. Not all are first-place winners, and four are well known and their plays easily available elsewhere (e.g., Norman's Getting Out is anthologized in Best Plays of 1978-1979 , Dodd, 1979, and is contained in Four Plays , Theatre Communications Grp., 1988; and Churchill's Serious Money can be found in Churchill: Plays 2 , Methuen, 1990). Other fine plays from more obscure authors involved in the competition deserve a wider audience. Only for collections lacking any works by these authors.
