Looking for Jaguar takes you on an expedition through the world's rain forests. In Costa Rica you will trek across a jungle in the clouds. In Brazil you will canoe among treetops. In Belize you will stand in the spattering rain listening to howler monkeys roar. In Borneo you will cling to a rope bridge high in the canopy.

And what will you see? Astonishing things:

  • A flower three feet in diameter that stinks like rotting meat
  • An antelope so small and a frog so large that both are the same size
  • A flying snake
  • A tree that walks

Astonishing -- and true!

About the Author:

Susan Katz is the author of the picture books Mrs. Brown on Exhibit and Other Museum Poems, which Kirkus Reviews called “totally delightful,” and A Revolutionary Field Trip: Poems of Colonial America. She shares her love of poetry by running poetry workshops for children in schools and elsewhere. Her novel Snowdrops For Cousin Ruth was cowinner of the Paterson Prize and a Publishers Weekly “Flying Start.” She lives in Phoenixville, PA.

Lee Christiansen illustrated Water Hole Waiting by Jane Kurtz and Christopher Kurtz. School Library Journal called the illustrations "breathtaking" while Kirkus Reviews noted the "vivid artwork complements the elegant text, often extending it with additional details." Water Hole Waiting was named a School Library Journal Best Book and a National Science Teachers Association/Children's Book Council Outstanding Science Trade Book.

Lee Christiansen lives in Red Lodge, Montana, with his wife and sons.

From Booklist:
*Starred Review* Gr. 2-4. A tour of the most biologically diverse regions of the world, conducted with correspondingly diverse poetry, awaits young readers in a collection as useful in the science classroom as in language arts units. In many of her 19 sharply honed poems, Katz writes in formal verse that elegantly reflects the overarching design that governs the seemingly chaotic rhythms of the rain forest. In all, she speaks directly to her audience through child-friendly metaphor (an okapi is "a jigsaw puzzle put together wrong"), affable humor (the carrion-scented rafflesia "isn't a plant that tries hard to please ya"), and plenty of mind-boggling facts (a pair of poems, cleverly presented on facing pages, describe extreme species of antelope and frog, both "the size of a pet cat"). Though the soft edges of Christiansen's pastels blur the exotic details that many children will yearn for, his shadowy jade tones and misty textures nicely approximate the atmosphere of a dim, humid rain forest. An appendix defining the poetic forms used, which include pantoum and haiku-like lunes, would have made this book even more useful, but the existing factual endnotes sturdily support the book's informational purpose.
